Supreme Council of Universities Approves “Matetsada’sh” Competition for University Students to Combat Misinformation and Promote Digital Awareness

As part of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s strategy to enhance societal awareness and strengthen university students’ capabilities in dealing with digital content, the Supreme Council of Universities has approved the launch of the “Matetsada’sh” Competition for Egyptian university students, in cooperation with the Student Activities Sector and the Leadership Preparation Institute.

The competition is held under the patronage of Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and under the supervision of Dr. Mostafa Refaat, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Universities; Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, Media Advisor and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry; and Dr. Karim Hammam, Advisor to the Minister for Student Activities and Director of the Leadership Preparation Institute.

The competition is also organized in collaboration with the Innovators and Geniuses Support Fund, under the supervision of Dr. Tamer Hamouda, Executive Director of the Fund, as part of a series of initiatives aimed at supporting creative ideas and raising youth awareness of societal and digital challenges, reflecting the integration of national efforts to build a generation capable of innovation and positive impact.

The competition seeks to counter misinformation and false narratives circulating on social media and digital platforms by encouraging students to produce awareness-raising videos that promote a culture of fact-checking, critical thinking, and social responsibility through innovative and engaging content.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning students during an awards ceremony organized at the Ministry’s headquarters, in recognition of outstanding work and to encourage creativity and active participation in spreading public awareness.

In this context, Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar emphasized that the competition is part of the Ministry’s efforts to foster media literacy among university students and enhance their ability to distinguish between accurate and misleading information. He noted that combating misinformation has become a shared societal responsibility requiring collective efforts.

The Ministry’s spokesperson further explained that Egyptian universities serve as key environments for shaping awareness, and that such initiatives help transform students from passive recipients of information into responsible content creators capable of making a positive impact on society.

For his part, Dr. Karim Hammam stated that the “Matetsada’sh” Competition aims to build a conscious generation equipped with critical thinking and analytical skills, capable of addressing modern digital challenges. He added that awareness videos represent an effective tool for engaging young people in a language that resonates with them.

He also noted that the competition goes beyond the production of artistic content, seeking instead to promote a social culture based on verifying information before sharing it and strengthening students’ role in supporting public awareness both within and beyond university campuses.

The competition is open to students from public, private, technological, and national universities, as well as higher institutes. Participants are required to produce an awareness video ranging from one to three minutes in length, focusing on combating misinformation and promoting fact-checking in a creative manner.

Submissions may include various formats such as dramatized videos, awareness reports, and short creative content, with participants encouraged to utilize modern technologies and artificial intelligence tools in content production.

Entries will be evaluated by a judging committee based on a range of artistic and creative criteria, including clarity of concept, production quality, voice performance, visual effects, and adherence to the specified duration, ensuring the selection of works that reflect students’ creativity and innovation.

The competition will continue through July 15, reflecting the State’s commitment to empowering youth with digital awareness tools and reinforcing the role of universities in preparing a generation capable of combating misinformation and producing responsible, purposeful content.
