Minister of Higher Education: Developing University Hospitals and Enhancing the Quality of Healthcare and Medical Education Are Top Priorities

Dr. Abdelaziz Qansowa , Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, affirmed that the Ministry continues its efforts to enhance the quality of healthcare services and medical education, and to develop the university hospitals system, in a way that contributes to improving the level of healthcare services provided to citizens, while supporting medical education and scientific research.

The Minister explained that these initiatives aim to strengthen the role of university hospitals in delivering healthcare, education, and research services through upgrading infrastructure, increasing bed capacity, equipping hospitals with advanced technologies, and digitizing administrative systems to streamline procedures and enhance service efficiency.

He also noted that developing the capabilities of young medical and nursing staff will be achieved through advanced training and educational programs, linking education with practical application and international standards. University hospitals will continue to actively participate in national and presidential health initiatives, including eliminating waiting lists, telemedicine, oncology programs, mental health initiatives, addiction treatment, autism diagnosis and treatment, as well as medical convoys and campaigns benefiting hundreds of thousands of citizens.

The Minister further highlighted that development efforts include strengthening scientific research and medical technology, upgrading diagnostic and treatment centers, and linking medical education with research-driven innovation. In addition, qualified university hospitals will be integrated into the Universal Health Insurance System nationwide. Efforts will also focus on preparing university hospitals for accreditation by the General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation (GAHAR), and completing new hospitals currently under construction, thereby supporting continuous medical education and improving the quality of healthcare services.

He pointed out that the number of university hospitals has reached 147, including 52 specialized hospitals, contributing approximately 30% of total healthcare bed capacity and 50% of intensive care beds in the government sector. In 2025, these hospitals served around 32 million patients and provided 76% of tertiary-level services related to advanced surgeries. A total of 658,000 surgeries were performed, including 393,000 major and highly specialized operations. The number of medical tests reached 26,732,576, while diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures totaled 7,324,236. Intensive care and neonatal incubator cases reached 177,391.

Dr. Qansowa  emphasized that these efforts rely on sustained investments in infrastructure, equipment, and human capacity development, as well as strengthening local and international cooperation to ensure the delivery of advanced healthcare services, while supporting medical education and scientific research. This reflects the State’s commitment to achieving excellence and innovation in the healthcare sector and advancing the goals of Egypt Vision 2030.
