Higher Education: 21 Egyptian Universities Ranked in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026

▪︎ Egyptian universities ranked among the world’s top 50 in Veterinary Medicine and Petroleum Engineering, and among the top 100 globally in Pharmacy, Anatomy & Physiology, and Dentistry
▪︎ Increase in the number of ranked universities in Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 have been announced, revealing the inclusion of 21 Egyptian universities among 1,900 higher education institutions from over 100 countries worldwide.

Egyptian universities were ranked in 42 academic disciplines out of a total of 55 subjects covered by the ranking.

Dr. Abdelaziz Qansoua, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, stated that these results reflect sustained efforts to enhance the academic reputation of Egyptian universities and improve the quality of scientific research. He commended universities for expanding into disciplines that were not previously ranked, while maintaining academic and research excellence in fields where they have already established strong performance. He noted that this year’s results place Egypt among countries contributing new academic impact to the global ranking.

The Minister also praised the progress achieved by Egyptian universities in key academic disciplines, as well as the increase in the number of ranked universities from 19 to 21 compared to the 2025 results.

The ranking results highlighted Cairo University’s position at 46th globally in Petroleum Engineering, and Zagazig University at 45th globally in Veterinary Medicine. Al-Azhar University ranked 36th worldwide in Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies.

Among the world’s top 100 universities in various subjects, Cairo University ranked 53rd globally in Pharmacy. Cairo and Alexandria Universities were also ranked in Veterinary Medicine, while Cairo University was ranked in Anatomy & Physiology and Library & Information Management.

Alexandria University and the American University in Cairo were ranked in Petroleum Engineering, while Cairo, Alexandria, and Mansoura Universities were ranked in Dentistry.

The rankings also showed a significant increase in the number of Egyptian universities across several disciplines, including Computer Science (from 10 to 13 universities), Agriculture (from 8 to 13), and Pharmacy (from 8 to 12), in addition to growth in Mathematics, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Education, Linguistics, and Emerging Sciences.

Egyptian Universities Rankings by Subject (QS 2026):

In Computer Science & Information Systems, 13 universities were ranked, including Cairo University (136), Ain Shams University (351–400), Alexandria University and Zagazig University (451–500), Mansoura University (501–550), Al-Azhar University (551–600), the German University in Cairo and the Capital University (701–750), and others.

In Engineering & Technology, 8 universities were ranked, led by Cairo University (141), followed by Ain Shams (245), Alexandria (285), the American University in Cairo (335), and others.

In Electrical & Electronic Engineering, 8 universities were ranked, including Cairo University (143), Ain Shams (201–250), and Alexandria (301–350).

In Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering, 8 universities were ranked, with Cairo University in the (151–200) band.

In Petroleum Engineering, 7 universities were ranked, led by Cairo University at 46th globally, followed by Alexandria University and the American University in Cairo (51–100).

In Chemical Engineering, 4 universities were ranked, led by Cairo University (151–200).

In Civil Engineering, 3 universities were ranked, led by Cairo University (101–150).

In Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, Cairo University was ranked within (101–200).

In Medicine, 12 universities were ranked, led by Cairo University (164 globally).

In Pharmacy, 12 universities were ranked, with Cairo University (53 globally).

In Life Sciences, 7 universities were ranked, led by Cairo University (162 globally).

In Anatomy & Physiology, 4 universities were ranked, with Cairo University in the (51–100) band.

In Dentistry, 3 universities (Cairo, Alexandria, and Mansoura) were ranked within (51–150).

In Veterinary Medicine, 3 universities were ranked, led by Zagazig University (45 globally).

In Nursing, Cairo University (101–150) and Alexandria University (151–225) were ranked.

In Agriculture & Forestry, 13 universities were ranked, led by Cairo University (101–150).

In Chemistry, 10 universities were ranked, with Cairo University (147 globally).

In Biological Sciences, 8 universities were ranked.

In Mathematics, 7 universities were ranked.

In Materials Science, 6 universities were ranked.

In Physics & Astronomy, 6 universities were ranked.

In Environmental Sciences, 6 universities were ranked.

In Natural Sciences, 5 universities were ranked, led by Cairo University (220 globally).

In Architecture & Built Environment, 4 universities were ranked.

In Modern Languages, 4 universities were ranked.

In Social Sciences & Management, 4 universities were ranked.

In Arts & Humanities, 3 universities were ranked.

In Linguistics, 3 universities were ranked.

In Education, 3 universities were ranked.

In Politics & International Studies, 2 universities were ranked.

In English Language & Literature, 2 universities were ranked.

In Accounting & Finance, 2 universities were ranked.

In Business & Management Studies, 2 universities were ranked.

In Economics & Econometrics, 2 universities were ranked.

In Communication & Media Studies, the American University in Cairo was ranked.

In Archaeology, Cairo University was ranked.

In Art & Design, the Capital University was ranked.

In Development Studies, the American University in Cairo was ranked.

In Law, Cairo University was ranked.

In Library & Information Management, Cairo University was ranked within (51–100).

In Statistics & Operational Research, Cairo University was ranked within (151–200).

In Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies, Al-Azhar University ranked 36th globally.

Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, Media Advisor and Official Spokesperson of the Ministry, stated that the QS ranking is based on four key indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations, and international research collaboration.

He added that this year’s edition covers 55 sub-disciplines across five broad subject areas: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management.

He also noted that the ranking aims to help students identify and compare academic programs offered by universities worldwide, serving as a starting point for selecting suitable fields of study.

The spokesperson highlighted the significant role played by Egyptian universities in improving their QS ranking indicators, driven by research policies, increased funding, and international collaboration, which have contributed to higher citation rates and publication in high-impact journals.

He further emphasized the importance of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank in providing extensive scientific resources to researchers, scholars, and decision-makers, thereby supporting scientific research and enhancing the global visibility and ranking of Egyptian universities and research institutions, in line with Egypt Vision 2030, which aims to prepare a generation of graduates capable of driving progress across all sectors.
